This form of breathing will produce enormous power. If you need to exert a “slow” kind of force such as is required in lifting or pushing a heavy object, exhale slowly as you expand the lower abdomen. However, when you deliver any kind of strike or kick, the breath must be exhaled as quickly as possible.

The human body is akin to a machine that is powered by a bellows. The greater the quantity of air that is pumped through it, the stronger it will move. The faster the air is pumped through it, the faster the body will move. To expel your breath quickly, you must make a large opening and push the air out. This means that you must open your mouth. If you try to exhale primarily through the nostrils, you cannot get the air out quickly enough because the openings are simply too small. Exhale two-thirds of your breath in the space of an instant, keeping one-third in reserve (fig. 9.4).
